John H. Hagen brings over 25 years of leadership experience in working with digital library and institutional repository development, electronic thesis and dissertation program implementation and coordination as well as providing counsel on intellectual property, scholarly communications and multimedia topics and conference planning / organization and sponsorship fundraising, advocacy efforts and editorial review services for individuals and institutions.

Hagen’s contributions to the area of ETDs and scholarly communications have been published and cited extensively in trade journal articles, interviews and conference proceedings. He has also presented and published presentation and papers at a variety of digital library and information technology conferences around the world including the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) and the United States Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Association (USETDA).

Activism & Advocacy

John H. Hagen’s activism and advocacy efforts extend throughout the digital library world as well as his volunteer endeavors on behalf of the LGBTQ community including human rights, social equality and environmental sustainability issues. His service work on various Boards of Directors includes leadership at the local, state and national levels. Organizations in which Hagen has been involved include the American Library Association, WVU Council on Sexual Orientation, Social Justice Council, Caritas House, Morgantown Human Rights Commission, Fairness West Virginia and the Human Rights Campaign.

Hagen’s vast experience demonstrates that he is a tremendous advocate, an evangelist, for the open access in scholarly communications movement as well as for social equality reform movements. His transformational work has broadened the scope of the field.
